Some Facts About

The Harmony Area School District:

THE DISTRICT DEMOGRAPHICS

The Harmony Area School District is located in the south-western corner of Clearfield County, in Pennsylvania.  We are a rural school district bordering Cambria and Indiana Counties.  The district consists of two townships (Burnside and Chest) and two boroughs (Cherry Tree, Indiana County, and Westover, Clearfield County.)

The district has about 300 students, 47 professional staff members and 20 support staff members.  The district has one building, which houses a PreK-3 program, a PreK-4 program, and Kindergarten through grade 12.

In addition to a strong academic program, the district offers Art Instruction, Music Instruction, and Physical Education Instruction – all with certified instructors.  In addition, opportunities are provided in Enrichment Programs, Tutorial Programs, Field Trips, and Title I services.

The configuration of our school involves Pre-K to grade 6 in the elementary and grade 7 to 12 in the Jr-Sr High School.  Students in grades 7, 8, and 11 take the  PSSA Testing in Reading and Math.  Students in grades 8 and 11 take the Writing PSSA tests.  All students in the Jr-Sr High are also required to pass the state Keystone Exams in Biology, Algebra, and Literature.  In addition to the regular academic program, opportunities are provided in:  Art, Music, Enrichment and Tutorial Programs, Industrial Arts, Technology, Family Consumer Science, and Vocational Technology Education.

In the Jr-Sr High approximately 57% seek post secondary degree-granting institutions upon graduation, approximately 7% enter the armed forces and approximately 17% enter the workforce.

Harmony Area School District’s success can be measured by the Keystone Awards it has received in making AYP.  The elementary school has made AYP for five years.  The middle school and high school have also made AYP for five years. The fully accredited district is constantly involved in a curriculum updating program so that, while the basics of education are stressed, new ideas can be incorporated into the overall program.

The school district offers opportunities for extra-curricular athletics.  The Harmony Owls won the Moshannon Valley League Championships in both boys’ and girls’ basketball in 2008.  We also offer baseball, softball, and cooperative sports in football, soccer, track and field, and wrestling.

THE COMMUNITY

The Harmony Area School District is a rural farming community.  It is located in the midst of the beautiful mountains and valleys of the Laurel Highlands of Central Pennsylvania.  The area is home to many family farms that have been in existence for generations.  The area also has family owned markets and lumber mills.

Harmony Area School is located approximately 35-45 minutes from Clearfield, DuBois, Indiana, Altoona, Johnstown and Ebensburg.

RECREATION

The district is close enough to many forms of recreation.  Pennsylvania is the hunting and fishing capital of the country and Clearfield County is in its center.  There are many State Game Lands near the district.  Also, there are ATV and recreational vehicle parks, that provide many trails for riding.  There are golf courses, lakes for boating, skiing or swimming, and state parks all within an hour’s drive from the district.
