SCHOOL-PARENT COMPACT

 

 

 

 

The Harmony Area School District, and the parents of the students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (participating children), agree that this compact outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve the State’s high standards.

This school-parent compact is in effect during school year 2009- 2010.

 

School Responsibilities

 

The    Harmony Area School District        will:

 

  1. Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards as follows:

 

The school district will utilize research based curriculum programs whenever possible.  The district will utilize trainings offered through the local Intermediate Unit and PATTAN to stay informed of the most current instructional practices.  The district will also use highly qualified staff to provide for an effective learning environment.

 

 

  1. Hold parent-teacher conferences (at least annually in elementary schools) during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement.  Specifically, those conferences will be held:

 

Conferences will be held on district Act 80 days.  For the current school year those dates are October 12th and February 15th.

 

  1. Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress.  Specifically, the school will provide reports as follows:

 

Report cards will be sent home four times during the course of the school year.  Deficiency reports will be sent home for any student receiving a failing grade in a subject area in the middle of the grading period. Provide Individual Student Reports on PSSA performance to applicable parents.  Providing parents with access to the internet based grade book system (Home Logic).

 

  1. Provide parents reasonable access to staff.  Specifically, staff will be available for consultation with parents as follows:

 

Staff members are available to speak to parents during their prep periods as well as the end of the day as well as during assigned parent teacher conference days.  Parents are also encouraged to leave a voice mail for teachers by using the phone directory provided in the back of the Student Handbook. 

 

  1. Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom activities, as follows:

 

Parents may at any time observe a classroom with prior notification in writing specifying the date and time for the observation.  Parent volunteers may be set up through the office, classroom teacher or through one of two parent groups (SCC or HEB).  Please contact the school office for more information.

 

Parent Responsibilities

We, as parents, will support our children’s learning in the following ways:

 

 

·         Monitor my child’s attendance.

·         Monitor my child’s assignments and ensure homework completion.

·         Send my child to school regularly, on time, well-fed and well-rested.

·         Provide my child a quiet place to study.

·         Spend time reading with my child daily.

·         Attend school functions and conferences.

·         Encourage my child to demonstrate respect for school personnel, his/her classmates and school property.

·         Participate in decisions relating to my child’s education.

·         Communicate with my child’s teacher to discuss my child’s progress.

·         Check my child’s assignment book on a daily basis.
