High School Project

Purpose and Requirements

The purpose of the project is to assure that the student is able to locate, apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information and communicate significant knowledge and understanding in one or more areas of concentrated study.  This project is an opportunity for the student to work independently or cooperatively with others to demonstrate how the knowledge and skills gained can be used to create something of value in our society.  It is expected that the student will use individual strengths and interests in choosing and carrying out this project.

Requirement

Each student will be required to:

  1. Demonstrate mastery of multiple academic standards
  2. Defend or demonstrate the project during a Senior Fair or similar setting
  3. Select a project advisor from the high school or vocational-technical faculty to serve as an advisor from the inception of the project concept to the final presentation

High School Project Guidelines

Selecting An Advisor

After deciding upon the project, the student should select an advisor from the professional staff to offer guidance to the student in preparing the prospectus, proceeding with the project, and preparing the presentation to the project review panel.

The student will request the participation of a member of the professional staff.  If the professional staff member agrees to serve as the advisor, the student will obtain a contract that the student and the advisor will sign.  Signed copies will be given to the advisor, the student’s guidance counselor, and placed in the student’s learning log.

If a student does not have an advisor by September 30 of their Junior year, the student will be assigned an advisor by the review project panel composed of Administration, Guidance, Librarian, and English Department.

Role of the Advisor

The role of the advisor may include the following:

  1. Consult with the student
  2. Read the prospectus
  3. Approve the prospectus
  4. Monitor student progress
  5. Remind students of deadlines
  6. Document the completion of the milestones to the Project Review Panel
  7. Suggest resources
  8. Guide the student in the steps of the process
  9. Critique the culminating paper

It is the responsibility of the student, not the role of the advisor, to fulfill the requirements of the project.

Resource Persons

In addition to print and electronic media students are encouraged to consult with other professional staff members, business and community members, family members, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other sources.

Prospectus

Two copies of the High School Project Prospectus form shall be completed and submitted to the guidance counselor by the end of the 1st semester of the junior year.  One copy will be placed in the student’s record folder.

If the prospectus is not approved upon initial review of the Project Review Panel, the prospectus must be resubmitted.

Neither the school district, nor the advisor, nor the Project Review Panel accepts any liability.  The student is free to seek sponsors to underwrite the estimated costs of the project.  Any contributions to the project must be cited.

Project Review Panel

Each Project Review Panel shall be composed of Administration, Guidance, Librarian, and English Teacher.  The panel will select a chairperson from among those assigned.  Each Project Review Panel will review the prospectus of the students’ projects assigned to the panel.

Public Project Presentation

The oral presentation to the Project Review Panel and general audience is to be 7-10 minutes in length.  The student should state the purpose, describe the project, explain the steps, and discuss any problems encountered.  The same information is to be included in a written report to be given to the Project Review Panel prior to the oral presentation.  The written report is to include a learning log that adheres to documentation standards.
